Telefónica Móviles chooses Nokia as supplier for Telefónica Móvil’s GSM radio-access network in Chile

Telefónica Móvil, Telefónica Móviles’ cellular subsidiary in Chile, has chosen Nokia as a supplier for its GSM radio-access network. Under the agreement, Nokia will deploy a nationwide radio network, including base stations and base station controllers, as well as the operator’s principal GPRS network.

In addition to network equipment, Nokia will provide installation and project management for the efficient network expansion, as well as a wide range of professional support services, including training, emergency service and software maintenance.

“This will be Telefónica Móviles’ first deployment of GSM/GPRS in its Latin American operations,” said José Molés, CEO of Telefónica Móvil. “As such, it is strategically important to us to choose a network provider with quality products and wide experience in fast and efficient network rollout and support services, which will also strengthen our position as the leading developer of the best services on the Chilean market.”

“We are very pleased to be extending our GSM business with Telefónica Móviles to Latin America,” said Félix González-Quesada, CEO of Nokia Networks Spain.  “We have long considered Telefónica Móviles to be one of our main clients in Europe, and this agreement enables us to also provide our GSM/GPRS solution for the company’s networks in the strategic region of Latin America. The deal will broaden the presence of GSM/GPRS in Latin America and pave the way for migration to more advanced technologies.”
