WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - May 7, 2012) - MADD Canada welcomes proposed amendments to strengthen Manitoba's ignition interlock program for impaired drivers.
Under the proposed legislation, first-time impaired driving offenders would be required to have an ignition interlock on their vehicles in order to have their licence suspensions lifted. Previously, the ignition interlock was mandatory only for repeat offenders, those convicted of impaired driving causing bodily harm or death, and those convicted of impaired driving while having a child passenger in the vehicle.
"Requiring all first-time offenders to have an ignition interlock sends a strong message about the seriousness of this crime and the consequences faced by anyone who makes the choice to drive while impaired," said MADD Canada Chief Executive Officer Andrew Murie.
The ignition interlock device uses breathalyzer technology to disable the vehicle if it detects alcohol in the driver's breath. The device requires breath samples from the driver both before the vehicle is started and at random intervals when the vehicle is running.
MADD Canada is also pleased to note the stronger sanctions for those drivers who violate their ignition interlock orders.
"Often, convicted offenders simply ignore the ignition interlock order or drive another vehicle. Manitoba is taking steps to reduce that and we commend them for their leadership," Mr. Murie said.
