Keep This Last Summer Long Weekend Safe – Plan Ahead for a Sober Ride Home

OAKVILLE, Ontario, Aug. 30, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- As the last long weekend of summer approaches, MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada are encouraging anyone hosting or attending an end of season bash to make safety a priority and arrange a sober ride home.

“Most people make the safe and responsible decision to arrange alternate transportation if they’re going to be drinking or consuming drugs,” said MADD Canada National President Patricia Hynes-Coates. “Tragically, there are still some who take the risk and drive impaired, putting their lives and the lives of others at risk. We’re appealing to them to leave the driving to someone sober.”

Crashes involving alcohol and/or drugs continue to be a leading cause of death in Canada, killing hundreds of people each year.

MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada partner to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and encourage everyone to help keep roads and communities safe by:

  • Never driving a car, boat, ATV or any other vehicle while impaired;
  • Never riding with a driver who is impaired;
  • Calling 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.

“The deaths and injuries caused by impaired driving are entirely preventable,” said Allstate Insurance Company of Canada President and CEO Ryan Michel. “We can celebrate the last long weekend of the summer and still keep each other safe by planning ahead and arranging a safe and sober way home. It only takes a moment of your time to prevent a lifetime to grief and regret.”

Whatever your plans are this weekend, please arrange a sober ride home. Call an Uber or a cab, arrange a designated driver, take public transit or stay the night. Those looking for a safe, sober and reliable ride home at the push of a button can check out Uber, MADD Canada’s Official Designated Driving App. Visit https://www.uber.com/partner/en-ca/madd-canada/  for more information.
