APRIL 2012 TRAFFIC
Passenger: rise in traffic (+2.8%) and load factor (+2.0 points)
Cargo: decline in traffic (-8.3%) and load factor (-3.5 points)
In order to facilitate year on year comparisons, passenger data has been restated to include the passenger business of Martinair.
Passenger business
Passenger activity in March 2012 recorded a 2.8% rise in traffic for capacity quasi stable (+0.3%). The load factor improved by 2.0 points to 83.3%. The number of passengers rose 2.0% to 6.51 millions. Unit revenue per available seat kilometer (RASK) ex-currency increased compared with April 2011.
On the Americas network, traffic was up 2.3% for stable capacity leading to a 1.9 point gain in load factor to 88.0%.
Asia network comparatives benefited from the impact on last year's data of the Japanese tsunami, and recorded a 7.5% rise in traffic for capacity up by 2.6%. The load factor improved by 3.9 points to 85.3%.
The Africa and Middle East network saw a 0.6% rise in traffic for capacity down by 3.0%. The load factor gained 2.9 points to 80.6%.
On the Caribbean and Indian Ocean network, traffic and capacity declined by 5.5% and 5.6% respectively. The load factor is stable at 83.8% (+0.1 point).
Traffic on the European network rose 4.9% for capacity up by 3.7% due the launch of the bases of Nice and Toulouse. The load factor stood at 76.1% (+0.9 points).
Cargo business
Cargo recorded an 8.3% drop in traffic for capacity down by 3.3%. The load factor declined by 3.5 points to 64.2%. Unit revenue per available ton kilometer (RATK) ex-currency decreased relative to April 2011.
Recent developments
The Group confirmed its position as leader on Europe-China routes: on 11th April Air France inaugurated the route between its hub, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, and Wuhan. This new thrice-weekly route is serviced by a Boeing 777-200ER. Air France and KLM operate 92 weekly fights between their hubs and 9 destinations in Greater China: Guangdong, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Wuhan and Xiamen.
KLM launched a seasonal connection between its hub, Amsterdam-Schiphol and Dallas/Fort Worth. With five weekly flights, this route will be serviced by an Airbus A330, in the framework of the joint-venture between Air France-KLM, Delta and Alitalia.
Air France and KLM pursue their investments in state of the art products, combining quality and comfort for their passengers. KLM is working with the renowned Dutch designer, Hella Jongerius, to modernise its World Business Class cabins. In April, Air France introduced new Boeing 777-300 ERs on long-haul routes with capacity of 468 seats, split between three classes.
Air France-KLM continues to grow its offer of flights to Africa. On 27th April, KLM inaugurated a new route to Luanda, Angola. Air France announced a new daily route to Abuja, Nigeria as of June 4th.
Air France deployed the Airbus A380 on the Singapore route. By Summer 2012, seven destinations will be serviced by Air France with the A380: New York JFK, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Montreal, Johannesburg, Tokyo-Narita and Singapore.
