Integrating GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) technology, both the Nokia 3590 and Nokia 6590 phones use packet data transmission for a high-speed connection to the Internet. This 2.5G standard allows for fast downloads of applications, rapid Internet browsing via the built-in XHTML browser, and the ability to receive MMS (multimedia messaging service) messages. Building upon the global success of text messaging, or SMS, both the Nokia 3590 and the Nokia 6590 phones include support for receiving multimedia messages, combining text, images and sound in one 'electronic postcard'.
"These new dual-band GPRS Nokia phones represent an important step in the transtion of American networks from systems designed for voice communications to networks that can quickly and easily give people access to information and entertainment from their handheld device" said Pekka Vartiainen, senior vice president of sales for Nokia. "By providing these advanced phones with 2.5G capability on both the cellular and PCS bands, our carrier customers can provide valuable mobile services across their entire network infrastructure."
With Java(TM)2 Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)) support for downloadable applications, the Nokia 3590 phone is made for the social communicator who desires customization of the entire mobile experience. By using the high-speed GPRS data connection, users have the ability to download a wide variety of Java applications using the Mobile Information Device Profile 1.0 (MIDP 1.0), including games, productivity tools, and business applications among many others directly into their Nokia 3590 phone.
For an additional measure of fun and personalization, the Nokia 3590 phone offers optional new 'FUNctional' Xpress-on(TM) color covers and downloadable polyphonic MIDI ring tones. New 'FUNctional' covers include Xpress-on active covers that integrate ring tone synchronized LED illuminated focal points into cutting-edge graphics, unique glow-in-the-dark covers, and an Xpress-on gaming cover that includes a special keypad design for improved game play. The polyphonic ringer on the Nokia 3590 phone makes it possible to download ring tones with multiple sound channels representing different instruments.
Combining an XHTML browser, the latest in wireless browser technology, with a high-speed GPRS connection, the sleek Nokia 6590 phone is designed for the stylish, connected professional. By using XHTML, which is the new standard for all fixed and mobile Internet content, the Nokia 6590 phone offers users an improved mobile Internet experience. XHTML allows for richer content, easier browsing, and advanced features like 'push', which allows pre-selected content like stock quotes, breaking news, or sports scores to be automatically sent to the phone. Additionally, high speed Internet and intranet access can also be accomplished while on the go by connecting the Nokia 6590 phone to a laptop using the integrated infrared port.
Recognizing that business and fun are not mutually exclusive, the Nokia 6590 phone also includes a built-in FM radio and a selection of optional Xpress-on color covers. Fully integrated into the phone, the FM radio is tuned using the phone's digital keypad, and includes up to 20 presets, allowing the user to switch from news to sports to music at a moment's notice. Additonally, while using the single or dual earpiece headset, the radio can be muted and a call taken simply by pressing the cord mounted answer/end button. Four optional front and back Xpress-on color covers, available in dark blue, red, dark purple and light blue, can almost instantly transform the look of the 2.9 ounce Nokia 6590 phone.
